I shrug my shoulders, and look round. There’s a key hanging on the wall. It is large, and is on a heavy iron chain. Together, we lift it and put it into the keyhole. With all our strength, we try to turn it. Suddenly, we hear a grating sound. The door opens, as if by an invisible hand. Cautiously, we take a look into the courtyard inside. I look left, then right: “The coast is clear. Let’s go in.”
We run to the other side of the courtyard. There are dark corners and the remains of walls everywhere.
“Perfect for hide-and-seek,” I think. When I turn round, Emil has disappeared. I last saw him by the tower. I run there and push the door open. Emil is leaning over a wall and looking down. I poke my head over the edge, and am looking down into a deep, black hole. When the sun shines through the window, we see something flickering below.
“What’s that?” Emil rubs his eyes.
“Gold coins!” I answer.
“A knight’s treasure,” shouts Emil excitedly. Suddenly the ground starts to shake, and a flame rises up. Two huge, yellow eyes are looking up at us from the black hole.
“A fire-breathing dragon,” Emil shouts. “Quick, get out!” We run and run. Past the giant gateway, through the forest and rocks. We stop when we reach a pond. We are out of breath. I turn around: “We’ve lost the dragon.”
Tired, we drop down on the grass. “Why is the dragon so angry?” Emil asks. “I bet he’s afraid of treasure-hunters,” I say.
“But we’re not treasure-hunters,” giggles Emil.
