Discover the Mullerthal Region

The Mullerthal Region - Where adventure meets enchantment

Often referred to as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, the Mullerthal Region - or Mëllerdall in Luxembourgish – owes its name to its hilly landscape reminiscent of Switzerland. The region is above all a unique biotope characterized by sandstone rock formations which are as beguiling as surprising. It is the unique composition of the rock and soil erosion that have contributed to the creation of this landscape so typical for the region. The diverse natural and geological heritage makes the region so special. In 2022, the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall became part of the international network of the UNESCO Global Geoparks. The combination of nature and geopark speaks for the special meaning and protection of the landscape.

As "capital" of the Mullerthal Region, Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg. The famous Hopping Procession of Echternach is part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Among the major tourist attractions of the city are the Abbey Museum, the Roman Villa and the Basilica of Saint Willibrod.

The Mullerthal Trail takes the experienced hiker on 112 km of hiking trails through a magnificent rocky landscape. The rock formations are dotted with difficult sounding names - Piteschkummer, Geierslee or Huel Lee, to name only a few. The footpaths of the Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland lead through fields and forests into the heart of a natural setting that is almost intact. Besides the demanding hiking routes of the Mullerthal Trail in the region offer a network of pleasant local hikes amidst breathtaking panoramas.

On foot through the Mullerthal Region

What would the Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg's Little Switzerland be without its wild nature and rocky landscapes? Emerald forests cover most of the area, rivers and streams meander through the valleys and majestic rocks line up the Mullerthal Trail.

The landscape enchants every visitor at first sight. The Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg's Little Switzerland is considered a paradise for hikers who love this place to indulge in their favourite activity. The Mullerthal Trail recently labeled by the European Ramblers’ Association as “Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe” enchants experienced hikers and amateurs and makes them discover the very heart of the region. The region has, next to the regional trail, many local and thematic trails. The proximity to the neighbouring countries is another advantage of the region. Together with the German region Felsenland Südeifel, it has set up the "NaturWanderPark Delux" where hikers enjoy four unique cross-border hikes.
