ECHTERNOACHER SÉI in Echternach

Jump to the activity

Today, we are taking to the water. In a pedalo. It works like a bicycle, only on water. As you pedal, the boat moves forward. I’m really looking forward to it, as I really like riding my bike, and riding a bike on water sounds like a great adventure.

Dad points to a bright yellow pedalo: “That’s got to be the boat for you.”

“Oh yes,” we chorus, at the top of our voices. Mia gets into the boat first. She reaches out a hand to me.

“I don’t need any help,” I say. I jump into the pedalo all at once. Instantly, the boat starts to rock. It’s moving from side to side. And wobbling more and more. At the last moment, Mia grabs my arm: “Be careful, Emil! Otherwise I’ll be fishing you out of the water.”

Mum unties the mooring rope: “See you on the other bank!”

Mia points to the tower on the other side and shouts, “Full steam ahead!”

We start pedalling. I look behind us. Mum and dad are standing on the jetty, waving. We continue pedalling. They get smaller and smaller. My legs are getting heavier and heavier. I have to stop. Mia is mad at me because I’m not pedalling.

“Emil, at this rate we’ll never get there,” she snaps. All at once, a lad from school goes past us on a paddle-board. Mia looks at me: “He can’t overtake us. Let’s show him.”

She’s right. We pedal as fast as we can. The water flies everywhere. We are making waves. The lad on the paddle-board rocks from side to side. We continue pedalling. The bank is getting nearer and nearer. The red-and-white lighthouse is getting bigger and bigger. Just a few more metres to go. And at the bank, we are greeted by mum and dad: “Well, you two pirates, how was your crossing?”

“Stormy,” I reply. Mia has to grin.

At the entrance to Echternach there is a large, man-made lake covering approximately 30 hectares. It offers plenty of opportunities for spending a fantastic afternoon here. Riding a pedalo, paddle-boarding, trampolining, or simply playing in the play area. The area around the lake also has the Roman Villa with its museum, a bike park, and several BBQ spots. The youth hostel has a small restaurant with a terrace.

And then there’s the Vital path, with its various play and activity points. Here, you can jump, swing, balance, rock and climb. You can explore the activity points together with other children and adults, and learn from one another.

INFOS & EXTRAS

A Walking Trail around the Echternacher See

The start is by the Echternacher See (in the large car park). Since this is a circular walk around the lake, you can decide for yourself which direction you want to set off in. We recommend walking clockwise, as then you can set off immediately on the “Vitalweg” (Vital path) with its activity points and have a short stop at one of the wooden loungers. You can also go swimming on Adventure Island, hire pedalos and stand-up paddle equipment or try out the trampoline park at Echternach Youth Hostel (open from spring to autumn). At the Roman Villa, you can take a journey back in time to Roman times and or forget the time entirely while playing in the adventure playground.

Echternach for Kids! Town Trail

Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, and there is plenty to discover here. And that’s just what you can do on the Echternach for Kids! Town Trail. As you tour the historic town centre, you have to answer a series of tricky questions.

The questionnaire is available from the Echternach Tourist Information office. Don’t throw the questionnaire away at the end of your trail, because with a bit of luck you can win something. Send the completed sheet to the Echternach Tourist Information office, because great prizes are awarded regularly from amongst all the correct entries. Good luck!
