HËLT in Rosport

“Here’s a nice spot to stop,” mum says. Ahead of us is a pavilion with a bench.

“Yes please – I’m starving!” I call out.

While mum and dad get the picnic ready, Emil and I let off some steam. Suddenly, Emil stops and listens. He cups his hand behind his ear.

“Do you hear that?” he whispers. I listen. Someone is singing. It sounds like an angel. It’s coming from the forest. We decide to follow it. We run up hill and down dale, ever further into the forest.

“That way!” Emil says quietly. I shake my head and drag Emil in my direction. The voice is coming closer. On tiptoes, we move forward.

“Wham.” I turn round. Emil is lying on the ground. He’s rubbing his knee. There’s a bag in front of him.

“I tripped over the bag,” Emil grumbles. I open the bag. It smells wonderful. The bag is full of herbs. Emil and I wonder who the bag belongs to. Then we hear the voice again. She’s very close by. We climb onto the rock, and then we see her: a figure in white. She’s wearing a wonderful long dress, with hair down to the ground. It is blowing in the wind. The woman is gathering herbs, and singing. We watch her for some time. Until suddenly....

“Grooaaar.”

My stomach rumbles really loudly. The figure in white turns round. We duck down. When we look out from behind the rock again, she has disappeared.

“You scared her away,” says Emil sadly. We decide to head back to mum and dad.

“Why are you so looking so surprised? Have you seen a ghost?” mum asks. Excitedly, we tell her about our encounter.

“That must be the ghost of the Kimmfrächen,” says dad, winking to mum.

She is dressed in white, with long, wavy hair, and she appears in various guises. She often walks through the forest on the Hëlt.

Keep an eye open for the Kimmfrächen if you are walking this route – you might spot her gathering her herbs.
