Description
The Alzette cycle path (PC 15) links the Centre circuit (PC1) in Dommeldange and the Sûre Moyenne cycle path (PC16) in Ettelbruck, passing through Steinsel, Lintgen and Mersch.
The Luxembourg-Ettelbruck railway line runs along the entire route of the path, so that you can combine your excursion with train journeys, or even return by train to Luxembourg city. From Mersch, halfway along the route, a ride towards the idyllic valley of the Eisch with its many castles and fortresses is particularly worthwhile.
Follow the capital’s river to the gates of the Luxembourg Ardennes, crossing lovely rural landscapes with their meadows and orchards, punctuated here and there by castles, the most imposing of which is Colmar-Berg, currently the residence of the Grand Ducal family. Continuing on the CR345, it passed through Welsdorf, Schirenermillen, Birtrange and Grentzingen to finally arrive in Ettelbrueck. The old route of the PC15, combined with the section opened in 2009, makes it possible to carry out a nice bicycle ride in a loop of about ten kilometres between Colmar-Berg and Ettelbrueck.
Directions
The starting point of the PC15 cycle path is to the east of Beggen near a small bridge over the Alzette. This is the connection point with the PC1 Centre cycle path. From this point, the PC15 goes up the Alzette valley in a northerly direction across the fields via the "Gewännchen" in the direction of Walferdange. At present, the user still has to cross the N7 at the level of the cultural centre, but it is planned to pass underneath the road to facilitate the passage of cyclists. The cycle path continues to border the Alzette in the direction of the PIDAL intercommunal swimming pool.In Steinsel, the cycle path joins the CR124 towards Mullendorf, with the Alzette still on its right. After a few hundred metres on the CR124, the cycle path continues by turning right and runs parallel to the N7. It passes through the fields, before reaching the village of Bofferdange and then Helmdange. After passing Helmdange, it crosses the Alzette at Lorentzweiler "Brill" to continue towards Hünsdorf. From Hünsdorf, the cycle path continues through the "Schwunnendall" on the CR123 and crosses the "Millebaach", with the Alzette on its right. Before reaching its next station, the town of Prettingen, the cycle path uses the CR123, which is open to traffic in the opposite direction, and continues parallel to the N7, passing under the new viaduct of the Autoroute du Nord (A7).The cycle path continues on the CR123 in an easterly direction where it crosses the Alzette again and takes the CR101 to arrive in Lintgen. It turns left between the football field and the railways (Luxembourg-Ettelbrück) to continue along the rails which it follows through Gosseldange, Rollingen, Berschbach to arrive in Mersch. At the entrance to Mersch, the cycle path crosses the Alzette. In addition, there is the possibility to consult the tourist information at the station of Mersch. Turning left behind Mersch station, you pass through the fields over the "Roudebierg" (with the highest point of this cycle path), "Eischschleed", and "Bilsbierg" to reach Pettingen. In Pettingen, the cycle path goes around the castle ruins and takes the CR306 for a few meters. Then it turns right towards Essingen, on the left bank of the Alzette. After Essingen, the cycle path continues for several kilometres through fields and forest to Colmar-Berg.At the entrance to Colmar-Berg, the cycle path passes under the A7, route du Nord, before entering Colmar-Berg. At the entrance to the Morisackre housing estate, you must now turn right to take the new PC15 route which opened in 2007. At Colmar station turn right, to follow the PC15 turn left to arrive under the N7 bridge. A new bridge over the Alzette was built in 2007, which avoids crossing the N7. Passing the bridge, you can access the PC12 and the centre of Colmar-Berg.Upstream of this cycle bridge, the PC15 turns northwards along the Alzette on a new section opened to cyclists in July 2009. After reaching the town of Schieren, you arrive at the Z.I. "rue de la gare", always keeping to the left of the railways. In Ettelbrueck (Z.A.C. Ettelbrueck) you have to turn left at the end of the "rue Thill", before you reach the N7. After crossing a roundabout, the cycle path runs along the Deich and finally joins the PC16.The former route of the PC15 followed the current PC12 from the cycle bridge towards Colmar-Berg. It then turned right over the tracks onto the CR345A. In Berg the cycle path followed the CR345 along the Berg Park on one side and the Grand Ducal Castle on the other.
